Honda takes the next step with its supercharged V3 engine
When Honda unveiled its new V3 engine at EICMA 2024, the focus was primarily on showcasing a new powertrain platform. At the time, the engine was displayed mounted in a rolling chassis, without a complete motorcycle and with very few technical details.
At EICMA 2025, the project took a significant step forward. Honda unveiled a complete prototype under the name V3R 900 E-Compressor, featuring bodywork, a new design and considerably more information about the technology behind the model. At the same time, the company confirmed that development is continuing with the aim of future series production.
A new generation of V3 engine
At the heart of the V3R 900 E-Compressor is a new liquid-cooled 75-degree V3 engine with a displacement of 900 cc. The most striking feature is its electronically controlled compressor which, according to Honda, is the world’s first of its kind on a motorcycle. The system regulates boost pressure independently of engine speed, enabling strong torque from low revs while allowing the engine to remain compact. According to Honda, the goal is to deliver performance comparable to that of a 1,200 cc engine, while retaining the size and agility of a 900 cc powerplant.
More than just a new engine
The new prototype is about more than engine technology alone. Honda is also using the model to introduce the company’s new Honda Flagship Wing emblem, which will gradually appear on future flagship models. In addition, the design clearly demonstrates that Honda is already working on a motorcycle that is considerably closer to production than the concept shown the previous year.
Honda has yet to reveal when the V3R 900 E-Compressor will reach the market or which model family will be the first to feature the new technology.
However, the fact that the project has progressed from an engine concept to a complete prototype in just one year is a clear indication that development is moving forward.
If the technology reaches series production, Honda could offer a unique proposition in the premium segment, where a compact V3 engine with an electronically controlled compressor has the potential to deliver both impressive performance and broad versatility.
