Tested: Honda CRF300L (2025)

I had the opportunity to test the Honda CRF300L over a weekend on very mixed surfaces – everything from twisty tarmac to gravel and forest trails. It was an eventful few days and I really got to know Honda’s little adventure machine.
What’s new for 2025
This year’s update chiefly brings improved suspension – Honda’s answer to perhaps the most common criticism of the model. The front fork gets new settings and the rear shock has been adjusted to cope with more varied riding. The engine is now fully Euro 5+ compliant, securing the model’s continued sale in the EU.
Smaller details have also been tweaked, such as better seat comfort and more ergonomic grips, but the core concept is unchanged: a simple, robust and easy-to-ride dual-sport bike.
Suspension – too soft for most
The big talking point around the CRF300L – both the standard and Rally versions – is the suspension. I found it compliant on smooth surfaces, but far too soft when the pace picked up or the terrain became more demanding. Many other owners share this view.
‘I love it – it takes me everywhere without surprises. But yes, the suspension is soft. I’ve upgraded it and now it’s perfect for me,’ says Maja Bergsten, who has, among other things, adventured in Estonia on her Honda.
Another owner adds:
‘It’s a perfect bike to start with. It’s friendly and easy to ride. I’m also thinking about upgrading the suspension, but as an entry-level machine it’s hard to beat.’

On the road and off road
On the road: Adequate for commuting and shorter distances, but it’s happiest at 70–90 km/h. Motorway work feels strained.
On gravel and trails: This is where it comes alive. Its nimble character and gentle throttle response make it fun and confidence-inspiring. It’s agile on both gravel roads and forest paths.
An adventure bike in pocket form
The CRF300L is a motorcycle many riders grow with. It’s excellent as a first taste of gravel and easier off-road, where its low weight and predictable engine make it easy and reassuring to ride. Thanks to extensive aftermarket support – from stiffer suspension to larger fuel tanks, fairings and luggage solutions – the bike can gradually be built into a fully fledged touring and adventure machine. That makes the CRF300L a versatile choice in its class: as much a beginner-friendly gravel bike as a light, nimble adventure bike for longer trips.
Summary
The 2025 Honda CRF300L isn’t a performance bomb, but it’s a reliable, easy-going and versatile adventure bike that has inspired thousands – not least thanks to Itchy Boots. The standard suspension is too soft for many, but it’s something you can either live with or upgrade. And it’s perhaps this combination – simplicity, dependability and scope for development – that makes it a modern classic.
Plus: Easy to ride, reliable, global aftermarket support
Minus: Standard suspension too soft (many upgrade), limited motorway comfort
